CONJOINED twins twins born with two heads and sharing the same torso have died aged just one day old.
The extremely rare twins were born weighing 8.1 pounds via C-section at a hospital in Beed, Maharashtra, in western India on October 29.
They shared a liver but their heart and lungs were separate.
Their condition was only noticed during their 32-week scan when the 32-year-old mum, who does not wish to be named, went for a routine ultrasound with her husband.
Dr Sanjay Bansode, head of the gynaecology department, said the twins were born healthy but their chances of survival were extremely slim.
“The babies were a case of dicephalic parapagus, or two-headed twins, which are often stillborn,” Dr Bansode said.
“Their condition was very critical and they were put on ventilator support.
“However, a day after birth they died.”
The couple, who are already parents to three daughters and a son, were shocked to find their newborn had two heads.
They pleaded doctors to save him but doctors said the case was too complicated.
“They were extremely poor and were nervous after the child’s birth,” Dr Bansode added.
“The mother did not know she was carrying conjoined twins until the 32nd week of pregnancy.
“They asked us to do anything to save the babies but such kids do not survive.
“There is no possibility of surgery either as they share most of their body parts and in this case had just one pair of limbs.”
Dicephalic parapagus twins are conjoined twins who share a single body.
It is an extremely rare form of conjoinment.
Because they share the same body it is not possible to separate the twins.
In many cases the chances of survival are slim.
