Impressive competition, but defending champion Nguyen Binh An could not defend the gold medal in weightlifting at the Asian Para Games Hangzhou (China) taking place today (October 23).
At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, Nguyen Binh An excellently won the gold medal in the 54 kg weight category with a record of 178 kg. He is also the Asian Para Games record holder in this weight class with a record of 179 kg.
Competing with Nguyen Binh An in Hangzhou this time, in addition to the home athlete Yang Jinglang, there is also “rival” David Degtyarev (Kazakhstan), who was ranked behind the Vietnamese athlete at the previous conference but is in high form.
In the first lift, Nguyen Binh An succeeded in lifting 174 kg while Yang Jinglang reached 178 kg and David Degtyarev reached 179 kg. In the second election, the Vietnamese representative successfully conquered the 180 kg level, breaking his own record. However, Yang Jinglang also succeeded at a higher level of 182 kg and David Degtyarev was more outstanding when he successfully lifted 183 kg.
In the deciding round, Nguyen Binh An continued to show good performance when he successfully conquered the 184 kg weight, breaking the Asian Para Games record. However, Yang Jinglang broke Binh An’s record when he successfully lifted 185 kg. David Degtyarev was even more outstanding when he conquered the 186 kg level, thereby winning the gold medal, breaking the Asian Para Games record and the Asian record (185 kg).
Nguyen Binh An said this was his best performance and was quite surprised with what he had accomplished. “I tried very hard to conquer a higher weight than I thought, but my opponents performed better so I had to accept the bronze medal,” Nguyen Binh An said.
So up to now, the Vietnamese disabled sports team has won 2 bronze medals at the Asian Para Games thanks to Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An, both in weightlifting.
