Little Jemma Kelly is only three years old, but at her young age she has already experienced a lot. The misfortunes that befell her could break many adults, but this young beauty is becoming stronger and more confident every day.
When Gemma was born, doctors told her parents that the girl was generally healthy, but her legs and arms were severely deformed. When she first saw her daughter, Tamara Kelly recoiled from her in shock: “She had only three fingers on each hand, there was no knee on her right leg – her leg was bent like a hook,” the woman recalls.
Due to problems with her limbs, primarily her right leg, little Gemma would not be able to walk or run. And then the parents decided that they could not allow her to spend her life in a wheelchair: “I want my daughter to have a normal life. She’s an amazing person, and I won’t let health problems stop her from enjoying life,” says her mother.
The parents made a decision that seems simply incredibly cruel: “The doctors said that they could try to straighten the leg with the help of metal pins, but then Gemma would have to suffer from endless examinations and operations all her life. We decided that it would be easier with our daughter’s amputated leg.”
The doctors tried to dissuade the parents, not believing that anyone could decide to do this, but they continued to insist. When Gemma was just nine months old, she lost her leg.
Two months later, the girl received her first prosthesis; now she will wear them all her life. The parents did everything to ensure that their daughter did not feel inferior in any way. They even sent her to the sports section so that Gemma could learn to understand and accept her body.
Now Gemma loves sports, she runs, jumps, rides a bike, dances and is going to become a cheerleader. “When her prosthesis is not visible, almost no one notices the difference between Gemma and the other children,” says the girl’s mother. “She’s absolutely amazing and we’re very proud of everything she does.” Every day the girl is getting better at using her artificial leg and learning to bend her knees.

Relatives say that there is never a dull moment around Gemma, she never sits still, even if the prosthesis is unfastened – then she just jumps around the house on one leg. Gemma never complains or expects anyone to do her any favors. She meets any challenge with a smile and invariably emerges victorious.
No one would be surprised if the girl considered herself abnormal, was sad and withdrawn into herself. But her parents’ support and her own optimism make her stronger every day.
