French doctor Stéphane Guero, who is known as the “witch of hand surgery”, will come to Vietnam from November 21 to 30, 2023 to provide surgical treatment for patients with hand deformities.
Opportunity for patients with hand deformities to return intact
Among the patients waiting for surgery , there are 11 children whose surgery costs are sponsored by the Children’s Enhancement Fund, FV Hospital. Among them, there are 6 complicated cases that require multiple treatments. Like the case of NTT (16 years old, in Hanoi) who has Apert syndrome, which causes limb deformities, in which the finger bones do not fully develop, so the hand does not form. Without a father and orphaned at a young age, T. lives with his elderly grandmother. With hand deformity, I have to rely on my grandmother for all activities.
In 2019, Dr. Stéphane Guero operated on T. to expand the membrane between his thumb. In 2022, I continued to have the membrane between the thumb and little finger of my right hand expanded, thanks to which T.’s hand has dramatically improved its grip function , helping me to take care of myself. This is truly a miracle for me and my family. During the next surgery, I will have the fingers of my left hand separated.
NPTV (6 years old, from Quang Nam) is also a rare case of hand deformity. When I was born, my hands had no fingers. Holding her child in her arms, the young mother burst into tears when thinking about her little daughter’s future.
With the sponsorship of the Childhood Enhancement Fund, Dr. Stéphane Guero has had surgery to separate his fingers and reconstruct his left hand twice before, in 2019 and 2022. A new future is gradually opening up now. She can now grasp objects with her left hand with fingers reconstructed by Dr. Stéphane Guero. The whole family is looking forward to this third surgery, where she will have her fingers separated and her left hand reconstructed.
Baby TNĐ (6 years old, from Quang Nam) is a smart and agile boy, but his right hand at birth was not as healthy as his peers. The thumb has no bones and the hand is curled and cannot be stretched. The family is poor, so the parents’ intention to treat D. just a distant dream. Then a miracle came when I received support from the Childhood Enhancement Fund and connected with doctor Stéphane Guero.
From 2019 until now, after having undergone 5 surgeries, Dr. Stéphane Guero has performed complex procedures such as implanting pins to form her wrist so she can straighten her hand, reconstructing the little finger muscle tendon and reconstructing the wrist. thumb from index finger. Currently, my hand can stretch normally and my thumb can grasp objects. This surgery in November 2023 will also be the last time, Dr. Stéphane Guero will have the fixation pins removed from his right hand.
Hand deformity surgery is a sophisticated surgical technique
Hand deformity surgery is a sophisticated surgical technique to bring aesthetic effects and restore function to hands deformed due to birth or accident. Effective treatment requires a surgeon who, in addition to having expertise in performing microsurgery, must also have experience in calculating options to ensure hand function after surgery.
Over the years, Dr. Stéphane Guero has treated hundreds of children with hand deformities in Vietnam through cooperation with FV Hospital. His complex techniques such as moving fingers, regenerating grip function, bone grafting , separating fingers for conjoined hands… have helped young patients escape disability. That’s why many people love to call Dr. Stéphane Guero “the witch of hand surgery”.
