A 2-year-old Indian girl has a strange disease that causes her skin to dry and fall out in scary patches.
The photos we introduce below show the plight of a 2-year-old Indian girl whose skin falls out every day. Doctors in New Delhi (India) said Shama suffered from lamellar ichthyosis – a very rare condition with an incidence of 1/600,000 people. It causes children to have lizard-like scales all over their bodies and causes their skin to become dry and hard.

This condition causes Shama’s skin to dry out and continuously peel off in patches. The disease also causes her to live in pain with the risk of infection every day. Symptoms of lamellar ichthyosis appear in the first few days of life and sufferers often have brown patches of skin. According to medical studies, this condition is caused by genetic differences that affect skin shedding. It occurs when both parents of a child carry an abnormal gene.
According to experts, lamellar ichthyosis can also cause a condition that prevents sweating, reducing blood flow to the fingers and toes, causing the skin to tighten. It can also cause eye problems, hair loss and difficulty bending the joints. Currently there is no method to treat this disease and the main method is to apply moisturizer.
“Lamellar ichthyosis is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the skin. Babies with this condition often have skin that sheds daily and are susceptible to infection , ” said Dr. Anjali Mahto, a dermatologist. In India, there are also children with the same condition as Shama, Sayali Kapase, 13 years old, and her younger brother Siddhant, 11 years old, when their skin becomes dry and falls off all over the body.
